Moved to LA to see what luck would bring
Had a hit in Chile so he went down there
Toured South America, shocked by what he found there

Saw poverty, people in fear
Turned his back on a Hollywood career
Colorado cowboy sang for the poor
Argentine government showed him the door
They were scared, he was bigger than Elvis -
Clenched fist salute and a waggling pelvis....

It is an amazing story.

The very first time I came to GDR was for the Festival des politischen Liedes in February 1986. And after the first gig I did, the very first thing the very first punker I spoke to asked me was "Do you know Dean Reed?"

Eh? "No!" I said.

But slowly I found out...
