...that it may work for the freedom of the Chilean people

"El Cantor" (The Singer), a film dedicated to the memory of Chilean folk singer Victor Jara who was murdered by the junta, is currently being shot by DEFA, the film studio of the German Democratic Republic. It describes the last three weeks in the life of Victor Jara and his tireless work for the Unidad Popular.

American singer Dean Reed, who lives in the G.D.R., is the film's author and director. He also plays the title-role. The script is based on interviews with Victor Jara's widow, Joan Turner-Jara, and on talks with close associates of Jara now living in Bulgaria, the Soviet Union and Cuba.

Part of the film was shot in Bulgaria. In an interview, Dean Reed described how the last demonstration of the Unidad Popular prior to the fascist coup and involving 10,000 people was filmed. The extras were members of the Bulgarian youth organisation, and a fake demonstration for the film turned into an overwhelming manifestation of young people's solidarity with the Chilean people.

Dean Reed, who knew Victor Jara personally and several times appeared with him, intends to make a film branding the inhumanity of imperialism and fascism. He hopes that "El Cantor" will be shown in many countries, most of all on the American continent, and that it may work for the freedom of the Chilean people. The film is due to be screened during next year's World Youth Festival in Havana.
