APUNTES DE VIAJE DE MARIA LUZ MARMENTINI

Dean Reed:

CABALLERO ANDANTE

"He venido a Europa a aprender", me dice.

Dean Reed:

Errant Knight

Goes through the world with his tuft in the wind; his golden 28 years; glazing the horizon with his guitar in hand. Is a "gringo" from Arizona, but I just learnt that he has an errant knight soul.

With the same energy that he attacks a rock and roll, he feels able to face windmills: He is interested in fighting for important things such as: Peace, Love and Fellowship.

"It's a more important mission for the artists than for the politicians" he says, in this sunny morning, drinking coffee in the Gran Via.

Dean Reed protesting? It's hard to imagine. His pacific look of elegant playboy, wearing a light brown suit and a light green shirt give to the conversation a touch of incongruity. I have known Dean Reed since he conquered the heart of the Latin American girls singing "Our Summer Romance"; since he made that successful tour in 1961 through "Ecran"; since... Isn't this blonde and athletic American the star of films arising like bubbles? Movies as "Guadalajara en verano" for example.

Well, this is another summer and we are not in Guadalajara, but in Madrid.

It's true, the sky in Madrid and the sun in Spain (wonderful balm to bring together beautiful dreams and millions of tourist dollars). Believe it or not, the speaker is Dean Reed. Although, is fair to admit that is a "new" Dean Reed.

He has traveled around Europe three times. Had sung from Moscow to Rome and has shouted at the rhythm of his guitar the need of understanding between men, the need to live with joy. Those are songs that he has composed. We could call them protest songs to be in fashion. He would like to create a musical enchanted bridge among the young people from the world.

He doesn't show years in his face, but in his soul. He has seen the sun in Arizona light up the wheat; has walked in the sunset in Prague when the dome of one hundred churches look like gold, has seen the deep sea in Monaco, and laughed with the joy of the Italians. Has lived in the jungle exploring unknown worlds.

And now he writes. In one of his books he would like to tell about his expedition to the jungle. Several articles have already been sold to an Italian newspaper. He is filming movies as well, he will play the role of Ivan Fric, diplomat, humanist and visionary, who lived in the Latin American Jungle. This is the European Dean Reed passing through Madrid. He would like to live in Italy, "where he feels the best".

"I have come to Europe to learn" he says to me, "but I keep believing the Latin America is the frontier of the future."

He doesn't know if he will come back to Latin America to Buenos Aires, where he had a famous TV show and where through the movies he conquered thousands of fans. Though he is very secure in what he has to say:

"The artist has more power than a politician. People don't believe in politicians. On the other hand, an artist can speak of universal truths."

Isn't this too dangerous?

"Yes! Is true. But my truths are very simple: Peace, love, and fellowship. If there is character whom I could call 'my idol', would be Marlon Brando: He has been brave enough to take a position defending the civil rights, even when in nine states they have prohibited his movies. I am firmly convinced that each person should take active part in the world they live."

REISENOTIZEN VON MARIA LUZ MARMENTINI

Dean Reed:
